Abstract

The aim of this research was to study Sekanak River water quality based on the
density of coliform and potential of resistance of Escherichia coli isolated from
the River to antibiotics. Most Probable Number (MPN) methods and Escherichia
coli susceptibility tests to antibiotics by disk diffusion methods were used in this
study. The results indicated that all water samples have a coliform density exceeds
the quality standards of river water listed in South Sumatera Governor Standards
Number 16th, year 2005 that the bacterial total should not exceed the 10.000
MPN/100ml limit. The susceptibility test showed some of the Escherichia coli
isolated from the samples showed indications several levels of susceptibility to
antibiotics such as Ampicillin, Gentamycin, Tobramycin, Canamycin, Cefixime
and Cotrimoxazole.
