Livestock development at suboptimal lands is less productive due to nutrition and environmental stress. Nutrition stress is caused by nutrients deficiency, toxin or antinutrients content of feed, whereas environmental stress is caused by improper livestock managements. Application of probiotics is one alternative that can be used to reduce the negative effects of nutrition and environmental stress. Probiotics supplementation in ruminants can be applied in calves as well as in adult cattle. Probiotics application in calves could reduce mortality rate due to diarrhea caused by pathogen or environtmental stress. Supplementation of probiotics in adult cattle could reduce the metabolic disorders such as acidosis, and methanogenesis. In addition, livestock development at suboptimal lands often uses feeds or forages containing toxins or antinutrients. Probiotic supplementation has the ability to reduce the toxins/antinutrients content in the feed which is beneficial to prevent its negative effects. Probiotic supplementation in chicken enhanced the productivity through the inhibition of pathogen infection. Based on our research, the livestock production at suboptimal lands can be optimized through the application of probiotics.
