PERUBAHAN KADAR KOLESTEROL TOTAL SETELAH PENGGUNAAN VIRGIN COCONUT OIL (VCO) PADA PENDERITA HIPERTENSI DI DESA LIMBANG JAYA KABUPATEN OGAN ILIR
Abstract

Abstract
High cholesterol levels in the blood were a risk factor for hypertension caused by blockages due to
cholesterol plaques in peripheral blood vessels which reduce blood supply to the heart. The researcher
provided an alternative by given Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) or pure coconut oil. VCO contains 50% fatty
acids in the form of lauric acid and 7% capriic acid. Both were medium chain saturated fatty acids which
easy to metabolize and will not increase blood cholesterol. This study aimed to determine change in total
cholesterol levels after used to VCO in patients with hypertension. The design of this research was
quantitative pre-experimental using One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. VCO has given for 2 weeks with a
dose of 2 x 30 ml. The samples of the study were 19 people by purposive sampling. The Data was analyzed by
univariate analysis to determine total cholesterol levels before and after used to VCO in patients with
hypertension and bivariate analysis to determine differences in total cholesterol levels before and after used
to VCO. The results of the Wilcoxon statistical test analysis showed that there was significant differences in
total co-cholesterol levels before and after used to VCO with p value 0,000 (<0,05). The average total
cholesterol level before and after has given VCO is 233 mg / dL and 221.15 mg / dL. All respondents
experienced a decrease in total cholesterol levels with the highest value of 22 mg / dL and as low as 6 mg /
dL. Researchers suggest VCO can be consumed regularly every day to reduce high total cholesterol levels.
